Welcome! I’m Miss.Education and I teach English, history, and poetry. I’m an LA based writer, music lover, and radical educator who writes my own curriculum. I also have a history of case management and advising and specialize in serving learners who have not had their needs met by the U.S. education system. I love to collab with families and community partners to help our kids get free.
This substack was ultimately created to house a repertoire of educational resources, essays, poems, curriculum, and lyrical analysis tools. I believe there is nothing more sacred than honoring another’s story, whether that story gets told on paper, screen, or wax.
I’m a millennial, raised in what M.K. Asante deems “the post-hip hop generation,” and that’s apparent in my approach to facilitating. Whether I teach with rap or teach about rap, I’m always mindful of what 9th Wonder calls “the genealogy of hip hop,” and how this art form borrows from “the soul family tree,” “the jazz family tree,” etc. The blues and hip hop are in conversation with one another, and I love when people map that out. I’ll often have several Genius and WhoSampled tabs running at any given time, as I’ll go down several rabbit holes just to research 1 song.
I’m also into analyzing lyrics and charting references, samples, homages, disses, and subs. So I’ll periodically share lists, charts, and spreadsheets I created to track commonalities between rap producers and funk legends, or to geek out with you over which Motown records get sampled the most. You’ll even find some random celestial knowledge (including your favorite rapper’s Mercury placement or natal chart), as astrology is a special interest of mine.
